  • The Ephesus Church - The lost of first love

Expressions As I was praying, I felt the spiritual condition of the present church is the lost of their first love. Of course, there are other failures in our Church as well, but this is one of them that applies to many of us.

'These things says He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands: 'I know your works , your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars, and you have perserved and have patience, and have labored for My Name's sake and have not become weary. Nevertheless, I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works...' Rev. 2 : 1-5a

We know that the Church in Ephesus was generally a fervent one. They had many brothers and sisters in Christ who upholded what is right, served God with patience and perseverance without weariness. They were committed Christians. However, God did not justify them because they were doing all these. Instead, God judged them by their inner spiritual condition and their heart and love for Him.

A lot of Christians are committed in church. They pray, perserve, serve God and even have a lot of prayers answered and miracles in their ministry, but they have departed from their first love.

What is this first love Jesus was talking about?
Some interpreted the first love as the work which the early Church did, miracles, signs and wonders. However, Jesus was not talking about works alone. He was talking about repenting and doing the first work, which is the first love itself. Jesus meant for us to 'DO THE FIRST LOVE'.

This may sound a bit absurd. How do we do the first love and what is the first love we are to do?

I remember when I first became a Christian, I was on fire for the Lord and I started inviting people to church, telling people about my changed life and sharing the gospel with my heart. I was in love with Jesus and 'addicted' with the Word of God.
However, after a few years, I lost my love and passion for those things and started 'progressing' as a Christian. But this 'progress' was not a spitiual progress, but a mental or physical one. The real spiritual one remained untouched. I believe that was what Jesus was referring.

Many people enter into the ministry, pray, attend church meetings and even evangelize without knowing that they have depart from their first love. They no longer carry the burden their used to carry. They no longer love the Lord as they used to love. They continued to progress in life and work with the same spiritual condition - the lost of their first love.

Therefore, let us come back to the things we used to do when we first love Jesus. Let us again love Jesus the way we first love Him. For in these, He is pleased.

    Jesus loves you!
