  • Understanding and working with the Holy Spirit ( I )

Expressions Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, God the Father, Jesus the Son and their Spirit, the Holy Spirit, is the Spirit of God. Christians need to understand the Holy Spirit and know how to work with Him in order to minister to others and fulfill the Will and Plans of God.

Too many of us have been working and serving on our own strength and think that by our own abilities or intelligence, we can win the world for Christ. This idea does not come from God, but from individual pride. They sought their own ambition, thinking that they are serving God.

    1. Don't serve God in our own ways and strength.
    2. It is not about how great or how well we are doing, it is not about what we can do for ppl and God, it is about following and abiding with the Holy Spirit to see greater results thru His strength. Many Christians failed to realise that and are not relying on the strength of the Holy Spirit.

    Jesus loves you!

    Discernment
    Tuesday, 28 June 2005 @ 11:44 PM SGT

Expressions We need to understand godly discernment and the exercise of it. Many Christians lack godly discernment to judge between right and wrong in a situation and in other's life, thus making their Christian walk ineffective, as they are not able to distinguish God's Will and Way.

Discernment can be classified as two types. First, there is the godly discernment of a believer who is able to sense God and the truth. Second, is the gift of discerning of spirit written in 1 Cor. 12(The gifts of the Holy Spirit).

Godly discernment is not gain by accummulating of intellectual knowledge.
It is not related to the degree of our intelligence. An intelligent man can be lacking in discernment.
The godly virtues of a believer's life help he or she to exercise discernment.
Godly discernment is being developed in believer's lives as they grow spiritually.

The gift of discerning of spirits is given for the work of God's ministry.
It resides in the believer's life and spirit.
The believer with the gift is able to exercise his or her gift every now and then.
The gift is to expose sins, spirits that are not of God, to sense what God is doing and to recognise the Holy Spirit.

    Ask God for discernment!!!

    God bless!

    Trusting in man

Expressions 'Stop trusting in man, who has but a breath in his nostrils. Of what account is he?' Isaiah 2 : 22

If we are to excel in our lives, we must learn to trust God and rely on Him. For what can man offer us, their strength and their help are limited, but God's help is beyond your strength. Therefore, those who rely and put their trust on things and people or an organisation, when their things, when the people or the organisation stumble or are shaken, they too are shaken in their 'faith' in them. Prophet Isaiah pointed to us very sharply, 'stop trusting in man.' For all the things which they did, they centred themselves with people rather than God. They please men more than God. Sad to say, the church in Singapore are in this present state of trusting in organisations, people's resources, methods, things etc as well. We fail to rely on God and look to Him for our resources. May God help us!

The Revival in Wales - Prayer comes first

Expressions 'O Lord, revive us once again, that Your people may rejoice in You.' Psalm 85

It is interesting to note that revival does not come from a mighty man of God, an anointed evangelist or even from the church. It comes from the Lord. The psalmist recognises it and he cries out to God to revive his nation and people. He was asking and looking unto God to revive them.

The Lord somehow spoke to me recently that if i want to see revival, I must pray. Taking reference from the Book of Psalm, we can be certain that it's biblical. It starts first with prayer. A cry for God to act.

Evan Robert, the man God used during the Wales Revival in 1904, was a man of prayer. He was a great example for us to pray for revival. Before the revival even started in 1904, Evan had been praying for about twelve years. He was 26 years old when the revival broke out and you can't imagine that he even started praying for revival at the age of 14. Moreover, his prayer was not like most of us, one or two hours kind. His prayers lasted for about 3 to 4 hours each time, he rested for a while and prays again. No wonder the Lord heard his prayer and saved 100,000 souls during the first six months of the revival. Had Singapore ever experience such a revival before? We will, if we start to pray diligently.

    God bless you!

    The Coming Financial Tsunami
    Monday, 20 June 2005 @ 02:09 PM SGT

Expressions Last April, I posted the article in this column “Is It Time To Be Extra Watchful ?” with the feeling that a financial tsunami is coming which will dwarf the 1997 and 2001 crisis.

For the last few weeks, I began to have a better understanding of how the financial tsunami will happen. I was surprised to read an article in this week’s edition of the ECONOMIST on the same subject which prompted me to post this article.

The Americans are beginning to behave like the Asians in the developed Asian countries in being obssessed with residential assets. They are beginning to learn that they can irk out cash from their properties to pay for instant gratification for luxuries such as cars and big holidays. To compound problems further, the US banks are giving interest-payment-only-for-first-few-years loans which Asian banks did not provide in earnest then.

The 1997 flu will pale in comparison to this coming tsunami because this housing bubble is also happening to China, England, Australia and Netherlands all at about the same time.

In early 1997, when I told all my peers about the coming collapse of the housing bubble in our nation, I was told that I was crazy enough to think it would happen because of three reasons:

    a. The scarcity of land in our small nation.
    b. The government will definitely take measures to prevent the collapse.
    c. Many citizens have deep pockets.

History showed that for a size like our small nation, we could not even prevent the collapse. So could huge countries like China, England, US, Australia and Netherlands prevent it ? Japan, with the highest savings per capita then, could not do so as well. None of the following cities – Hongkong, Bangkok, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur - were spared the collapse also.

With the reining in of spending in America as a result of the housing bubble burst causing the knock-down effect on almost all Asian economies and its own similar problems in China, you can imagine the adverse impact on the livelihood of its citizens.

I prayed that the Christians in our nation will take heed of this warning. Firstly, they have to put their own house in order, ie, they must take action now to put their finances in order. Secondly, they should ready themselves to help the unsaved affected by this crisis. We were unprepared in 1997 but this time, we have time to pray and work on it.

    May God bless our nation.

    Is it me or God?

Expressions One day, Jim woke up feeling rather heavy in heart. He did his usual stuff and began to pray. He was asking God for directions in life as he was at a crossroad of decisions. He was battling between his desire to further his studies by pursuing his Masters and taking on a $1200/- pay job as an admin assistant to help in his friend's company. To many people, we would have long concluded that it will be God's Will for Jim to pursue his studies because of the better prospect it seems to have. Because God loves us, that's why He will also want to give the best to us. He will not call us to do some lowly paid jobs or some lowly tasks, which will make us feel small. Jim was struggling in this as well.
